NCIS Season 21’s Unexpected McGee Story Gets New Tease From Star

Sean Murray teases an upcoming arc for Timothy McGee, where he uncovers the existence of a long-lost relative in NCIS season 21, episode 5.
Sean Murray teases what to expect from Timothy McGee’s upcoming family storyline in NCIS season 21. Despite having only released a handful of episodes due to its delayed premiere, a lot has already happened in the current year for the police procedural. Nick Torres almost went to prison for murder and was eventually freed from the charge, and then Ducky Mallard died, prompting Michael Weatherly’s Tony DiNozzo to return. As NCIS season 21 moves forward, other members of Special Agent Alden Parker’s team will be focused on.
In NCIS season 21, episode 5, “The Plan,” McGee will be under the spotlight as he learns about a relative. Not much is known about how it connects to the storyline or if it even has any ties to the case-of-the-week. There is interest in McGees’ family tree, especially considering the questions regarding his mother. Read Murray’s full quote from TVInsider below:
Delilah is trying to force him to get into a genealogy, track your ancestors down kind of thing, and McGee is sort of anti that at the beginning because he thinks it’s ridiculous. And then as soon as he starts, he finds out that he’s got a long-lost relative somewhere, and that freaks him out pretty good. But he goes down that rabbit hole.
Why McGee’s Personal Story Is Important In NCIS Season 21

NCIS season 21 will only have 10 episodes — a record-low output for the long-running police procedural, which has been on the air since 2003. Because of this, the writers need to be particular about the kind of storylines they want to tackle. On top of that, NCIS season 21 will also host the franchise’s overall 1000th episode, which will be a cause for celebration among all spinoffs of the show. As previously confirmed, the case for the milestone outing will be about Director Leon Vance.

While NCIS has always been an ensemble series, long-time viewers have a special affinity with Murray’s McGee as the longest-serving cast member on the show. With Ducky gone, he and Brian Dietzen’s Brian Palmer are the final characters from the earliest years of the show. He was trained by Mark Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs and worked alongside Tony and Cote de Pablo’s Ziva. Together, they are regarded as the best NCIS team iteration. Because of this, McGee has an established history with the show, and it’s important to continue developing his life outside the halls of his office.

It’s curious if McGee’s newfound relative will have a role in NCIS season 21 moving forward. If not, it’s still a great arc for Murray’s character. This is particularly special since episode 5 seems like it has an unofficial family theme, with the outing also debuting Jessica Knight’s dad, Special Agent in Charge Feng Zhao (guest star Russell Wong), who helps the squad solve their main case.
